Band
Speakers was created as an informative website about the differences in
cheap, low-quality speakers and cheap, high-quality speakers.
Also, we wanted to point out how much more money XYZ Pro Audio Speakers
(enter any big speaker company name here) Company can charge just for
putting their $1 logo on the front of their pro audio speaker
cabinets. We hope that you will use the information on this
website to help make an informative decision before you buy a set of PA
speakers for your band. This information is also helpful for
those who are looking to start a DJ speaker service or for bars
planning on hosting karaoke events.
Cheap, Low-Quality vs
Cheap, High-Quality
So, how can
you tell the difference between a cheap speaker that is just plain crap
and a cheap speaker that is worth every penny? One of the
biggest indicators (usually) that a cheap speaker is a low-quality
speaker is extremely exaggerated facts that are too good to be
true. I am sure you have seen speakers that can put out 2000
watts RMS, they are 10 inches, and only cost $60! What a
steal, right? Wrong. That is a statement that is
obviously exaggerated. Now, if you see a pair of dual 15"
speaker cabinets that cost $400 and are 700 watts RMS, that is probably
a high-quality set of speakers - and its still cheap. (Click
here for an example of high-quality speakers.)
If you were to by a pair of XYZ Pro Audio Speakers Company with the
same wattage and specs, it would probably cost you around $2,000,
easily. That is a lot to pay for $1 logo! We just
saw that you could get a high-quality pair of speakers for about $1,600
less - why spend more for the same thing?
XYZ Pro Audio
Speakers
Company vs Not-as-Recognized
Brand
Do you
really want to be charged 4 times as much money for the same set of
speakers just because it has a logo? I know I
wouldn't! Now, the name brand's logo on the speaker isn't the
only reason that the speakers cost so much more money. Let's
use the company Seismic Audio
Speakers for example. I am not comparing Seismic Audio's speakers to a
company like JBL, Yamaha, or Peavey, but dollar for dollar you won't
match the quality of Seismic Audio's speakers.
For example, if you need an 18" subwoofer cabinet,
Seismic Audio has one that is 1,000 watts RMS, 120 ounce speaker
magnet, and 4" voice coil - and for $290, you can have it shipped to
your door. (That's right! Shipping is free!) A cabinet with the same
specs at XYZ company runs for about $900 and that is without shipping!
Want another example? Let's look at Seismic Audio's 12"
Monitors. These
particular ones are sold in a pair, both are rated at 250 watts RMS and
have a titanium horn! The price is only 249.99 and it
includes free shipping! Now, the same monitors from XYZ cost
$300. That is not too much of a price difference.
Wait, I forgot to say they are $300 a piece! So, you could
buy these montiors with XYZ brand on it for $600 plus shipping, or you
can buy from a company like Seismic Audio for $250 with free shipping.
How does a
company like
Seismic Audio do it?
So,
you may be wondering how does a company like Seismic Audio manage to
make high-quality speakers for relatively cheap. The answer
is easy really. They don't spend big bucks marketing and they
aren't charging $100 bucks for their logo to be on the
speaker. Also, companies like Seismic Audio Speakers usually
sell direct where XYZ Company sells through hundreds of different
retailers adding more hands to put money in. Most companies
that can afford to make high-quality speakers cheap usually sell in
bulk to keep their prices lower.
Hopefully, you got some usueful information and tips for picking out
speakers. Of course, you can buy name brands like JBL,
Yamaha, and Peavy if you would like, but dollar for dollar you should
realize there are other options. Be sure and to check out
Seismic Audio at www.seismicaudiospeakers.com.
Don't be tricked
into
buying PA speakers, DJ speakers, Karaoke speakers, Church speakers, or
Band speakers (whatever your cause may be) for a high price just
because of the $1 name brand logo on the front!

Are powered speakers better than passive speakers? Well, when it comes to speaker for your band, it is really a subjective topic. I personally think that having a set of passive speakers and an amp is better. My reasoning is that when you have a powered speaker the amp and the speaker are in the same cabinet. While this makes it easier to move, it makes it harder to fix when something fails. If your power amp goes out in the cab but not your speaker, you have to buy a new powered speaker. Same goes if just the speaker goes out on you. With passive speakers and an external amp, if one of the two goes out you can easily replace it with out replacing the other. Obviously, over time this will save you money because you will be spend a few hundred bucks instead of the thousands you would spend on powered speakers!
